Jay's Covered Bridge
A Gift to the Creek
The Dream at the Clubhouse
Every great project starts with a conversation and a cold drink. On a June evening in 2022, following the Spring Big Cup Tournament, Bruce Halvorson and his longtime friend Jay Slind were sitting in the clubhouse talking about the future of Sioux Creek. Jay had a deep love for this course—he used to stop in for a quick 9 every time he traveled from LaCrosse to see family in Superior. That night, Jay shared his vision: he wanted to do something special for Sioux Creek, a landmark that would leave a lasting mark on the course.
Six of a Kind
The plan was to replace the transition bridges between the 5th and 6th holes, but Jay’s vision took it a step further. Working with the owners and longtime member and friend of the course, Quinn Johnson, the team designed an authentic covered bridge using rough-cut pine rafters. Before Jay’s gift, the state of Wisconsin only had five covered bridges listed. Today, thanks to his generosity and a hardworking crew (including Quinn’s father, John, and his sons, Drew and Nate), there are officially six.
A Lasting Legacy
Sadly, Jay passed away just before the bridge was finished. But the timing was perfect—he and Bruce finalized the design together just days before he passed, and he was incredibly excited to see it come to life.
Today, as you finish up the 5th green and head toward the 6th tee, take a second to appreciate the view. It’s a reminder that Sioux Creek isn’t just about the golf; it’s about the friendships made at the 19th hole and the people who call this place home.
